We hear this all the time….Does MUSCLE weigh more than FAT?
Short answer….NO! a Kilo of Muscle and a Kilo of fat is the same!!
Why do I hear muscle weighs more than fat, that’s why the scales more not be moving?
Muscle is a denser tissue which takes up less space in the body.
For example: if you have a 30cm x 30cm BOX and you fill it will muscle, you could (let’s say) have 5kg of muscle in the box!
NOW, if you try to fill a 30x30cm box with the same amount of fat (5kg), you would most likely only fit 2.5kg of fat, before the box is full.
So, if the scales are not moving, it could mean you are burning fat and building muscle to replace the fat, leaving you with a more toned and defined figure.
The best way to tell if this is happening, is to either track measurements, take progress photos, or perform body composition scans every 2-4 weeks.
A body composition scan will give you a breakdown of muscle to fat ratio.
Other ways to tell if you are losing fat and building muscle….your cloths are looser or you are going down on the belt notches.
Benefits of Muscle Over Fat Tissue
Muscle is a denser, leaner, more efficient active tissue. This means muscle will use more energy overall and in turn BURN more CALORIES!
Muscle supports bone density and bone mass, increases definition and reduces risk of injury.
Fat Tissue
Non active tissue which takes up more space in the body and does not provide the body with the muscular look.
Heightened risk of obesity which can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, kidney issues and more…
